Currently, I am a freelance substantive/developmental editor and recently worked as a Senior Editor at the University of California, Berkeley for six years. I run the editorial service business, PageTurner Editing. I offer accomplished developmental and substantive editing services, thorough editorial reports, market analysis, post-submission assistance (permissions, copyright, peer review), and consultation for fellow editors.
During the last fifteen years, I have edited work by a variety of authors in many genres: such as nonfiction by professional and trade authors (essays, self-help, memoir); creative writing (personal essays, novels, short stories, and poetry for literary journals and publishers); and academic work by faculty and post-doctoral scholars for university presses (peer reviewed journal articles, books, dissertations, prospectuses). I have experience working with manuscripts for general and targeted audiences.
I worked for The Guildford Press of New York as a Senior Editorial Assistant. At various levels, I participated in the process of publishing: acquisition, development, permissions, production, and marketing. My experience at Guilford prepared me for independent work in a pressured, fast paced, and deadline driven environment.
Additionally, I earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in literature at Saint Mary’s College of California. After completing my MFA, I furthered my editorial education by completing classes in Developmental Editing, Production Editing, Textbook and Art Development, and The Business of Freelancing. Prior to that, I graduated Valedictorian and Phi Beta Kappa in Law and Social Policy at the UCB. Consequently, I bring to any project both a solid academic background and comprehensive professional experience.
Throughout my career, I have worked in academically and professionally rigorous publishing milieus and have demonstrated an ability to edit writing from a range of disciplines: environmental science, psychology, sociology, literary scholarship as well as the creative arts. I have also worked with national and transnational authors for whom English is a secondary language.
There are several stages that may occur in my work to move from an author’s idea, outline, or initial draft to a complete and polished manuscript ready for publication. I suggest revisions based on multiple readings and advocate appropriate changes on the sentence and paragraph level. I engage in substantive editing along each stage of a projects development and maintain publication schedules to meet deadlines. If needed, I can provide guidance regarding illustrations and/or diagrams. I may act as a liaison between author and publisher and/or junior and senior authors.
I am also a published poet and author and was an Honorary Fellow at the Djerassi Artist in Residence Program. I enjoy working with a wide-range of authors across the spectrum of contemporary and university publishing.
Following are short descriptions of five published books I edited:
Black Faces, White Spaces: Reimagining the Relationship of African Americans to the Great Outdoors by Carolyn Finney (of the University of California, Berkeley). Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press (this book is in press and will be available June 2014).
Native American DNA: Tribal Belonging and the False Promise of Genetic Science, by Kim TallBear (of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin and the School of Political Science and Economics, Meiji University, Tokyo, Japan). Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, (2013).
Woolf’s to the Lighthouse, by Janet Winston. London: Continuum Books
(2009).
I was the developmental editor of the book, which was divided into the following sections: Literary Context, Language, Style and Form, Critical Reception and Publishing Performance History, Adaptation, Interpretation and Influence, and Guide to Further Reading.
Participatory Research in Conservation and Rural Livelihoods: Doing Science Together, Louise Fortmann, editor. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell (2008).
I was the developmental editor for this multi-authored book. I guided it from draft form to a publication ready manuscript. I worked in collaboration with the senior author and 18 national and transnational author/contributors, including academic researchers and civil scientists. The multi-lingual authors originated from Africa, Honduras, Indonesia, Sweden, and the United States.
Naked Lens: Video Blogging and Video Journaling to Reclaim the “You” in Youtube, Use Your Camera to Ignite Creativity, Increase Mindfulness, and View Life from a New Angle, by Michael Kaminsky. Winnipeg: Organik Media Press (2010).
