Recommendations:
"A consummate career professional, Lisa Carlson has been an editorial ally (and a supportive and reliable friend) for many years. She and I share a significant passion for writing, editing, teaching, and even theater, so she was my logical choice to guest lecture for the professional proofreading workshops at Media Alliance, an iconic Bay Area resource for media-minded aficionados for almost 40 years.
I hired Lisa based on her decades-long commitment—and proven track record—as an affable and prolific editor and writer. A former instructor and curriculum developer for UC Berkeley Extension’s Professional Sequence in Editing program, her insightful introduction to the complexities and subtle nuances of effective copyediting impressed my students greatly, inspiring a number of them to commit to pursuing editorial careers themselves.
That’s the sort of impact Lisa makes in all her vocational and artistic endeavors.
From her background in developing technical and business communications to her commitment to authoring instructional materials for future artists and writers, Lisa is gifted with the rare ability to address the technical and the creative, allowing her to accommodate a wide spectrum of employers, as well as attract an impressive selection of client types. That range in ability and accessibility is her most outstanding quality, one that reflects a proven success trajectory.
Even a quick overview of Lisa’s résumé will illustrate her extensive history editing, copywriting, and drafting copy for reputable companies (from startups to well-established industry leaders): communication campaigns, technical and medical training materials, coaching and instructional documentation, project proposals, leadership blogs, website copy, digital marketing, social media campaigns, and much more. Additionally, she is a talented, seasoned book and magazine editor who goes above and beyond to uphold and craft audience-specific copy.
Lisa’s robust work history speaks for itself; she’s accomplished, inspiring, and capable of effecting meaningful and measurable results. I cannot imagine my own success without her influence and collaboration. She doesn’t make me want to be a better person; she simply makes me better.
And for that, I’m most grateful for her seemingly endless expertise and dedication to the craft of effective writing and teaching."

"Lisa has been an excellent writing coach and editor for me. Her 'eons' of knowledge and experience has proven invaluable in the creative and technical aspects of the writing craft. But even more importantly, her engagement with me and my writing-- and what I want to say/be heard -- always remains paramount in our work together..."

A technical editor for clients like Ciena and Cisco, she has been copyeditor for The Battery Candy, a private magazine published by The Battery in San Francisco and proofreader for The Trust for Public Land's magazine, Land and People. She edits fiction and non-fiction books for local publishers such as Heyday Books and individual authors with original manuscripts and proposals. She has worked as technical writer and editor for top Bay Area companies and advertising agencies. She loves working with authors, creatives, and businesses, and is equally adept at developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
Translation: Lisa translates from French to English and from Spanish to English. Raised in Latin America, Lisa also lived and worked in France and has traveled widely in Europe, India, and Africa. She brings an international sensibility to her work.
Lisa chaired Bay Area Editors' Forum from 1996-98 and is a past co-chair of the National Writers Union BizTech division. She taught copyediting at UC Berkeley Extension, live and online. Students learned about the mechanics and nuances of copyediting and received additional insight into editors' work through collaboration on book projects, field trips to publishers, and guest talks by local professionals.

A few more words from satisfied readers and clients:
"We received our copies of the November edition of Montclair Living and were delighted to see your cover article on us. Everything about it exceeded our expectations. The final editing of the text brought several nice improvements; the high quality of the photos taken by Gary Schatan made the article quite inviting and visually pleasing; we especially liked your choice and placement of photos that brought to life the adjacent passages of the text.
Once again, it was a pleasure meeting you and learning more about your work. If you are ever in the neighborhood, please let us know so we can take the opportunity to share a glass of wine and continue our conversation..." - Karina Zaliants and Marc McGuire, Montclair
"Each issue gets better." - George Troy, author, Montclair
"...So delighted and the work really shines, yours, the photographers and the work that Liz and I are doing here 'on the farm.'"
- Charlie Costello, Berkeley
"I have admired your monthly magazine since its inception. You all do amazing work!"
- Lauren Strand, Montclair Realtor
"The Montclair Living magazine arrived yesterday (Saturday), and I just wanted to say thanks for the well-written article, on top of the solid professional interview. Both of us should feel proud. Best, Dave" (David Newhouse, sportswriter, profiled in the February 2018 issue of Montclair Living magazine.)
"What is the ingredient for an excellent community magazine? Fabulous residents, informative articles, respected business owners, the perfect photographer and without doubt the most talented content coordinator and writer, Lisa Carlson. She is the glue to our magazine, Berkeley Hills Living."
- Cathy Schmitt, Publisher
"Oh snap I JUST received my copies. I am unbelievably grateful for this rare and beyond generous opportunity. And, I could not be happier with the result. The article and photos convey, to a T, the message I hoped to convey.... I love it."
"What a delight it was to work with you. Could not be happier with my experience with you, Gary and Cathy. So grateful!"
- Berkeley Hills resident Amy Moore, featured in Berkeley Hills living
"I’ve heard so many compliments about not only the profile you did of me but this particular edition of the magazine in general. People who know me (my friends) love the way I come through in your piece. I heard many praises of Aaron Haiman’s piece about woodpecker hammering along with his illustrations. What a wonderful find. It says something when a magazine begins to generate columns working alongside the editor, such as Juliette Schatan’s two pieces, and also Jetta Martin’s.
Your hard work is paying off (I hope). Did I say that I like the new layout for the Poetry Corner? I really do—much easier to spot and then read."
- Berkeley Hills resident featured in Berkeley Hills Living
"Your comments/feedback are so “on the money." In one email you’ve summarized what I pretty much knew needed to be done… details, smells, history, climate of the times, kill some things, expand others, refine the dialogue, and so on, and so on. I so appreciate you taking the time to read the ms, and as I said before, to pass on such meaningful, sensitive, articulate feedback."
- Ron Osso, Novelist
