Definition: Acquisitions editing

In contrast to developmental editing, which defines the how of a work, acquisitions editing defines the what. Duties typically include the following:

  • Analyzing the identified market by studying marketing data, current events, trends, and printed products from competing publishers.
  • Finding publishable material for a given market.
  • Finding and signing authors.
  • Articulating the marketing goals for the project to the editorial team.
